Golf Course Advisory Board Minutes
September 15 2014
L
Ctyof
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
6. Staff Introduction: David Dean
The Board welcomed David as our new Golf Course Superintendent and introduced
themselves to him. David gave a brief summary of his career, starting his golf course
work at Hiwan Golf Club, Evergreen ultimately as irrigation technician. He then
obtained a BS Degree in Turf Grass from Penn State before joining the Club at
Cordillera in Vail. He progressed through a series of promotions starting on their
Short Course and ultimately as acting Course Superintendent at the Hale Irwin
designed Mountain Course. He was attracted to Coal Creek by the opportunity to
take over what will be effectively a brand new renovated course that, weather
permitting, can be played year- round.
7. Update on City Council Study Session.
Chairman Gambon reported that the presentation reviewed by the Board at the last
meeting was well received by Council and Council expressed satisfaction with the
work the Board was doing. Council strongly supported the concept that the Course
should not be opened for play until it was completely ready but encouraged Staff and
the Board to look into possibilities for a "Soft Opening" to generate some limited
revenue but, more importantly, to encourage golfers to return. Mayor Muckle re-
iterated that it was Council's intent to make the golf course self- sustaining after its re-
opening and with no debt related to the rebuilding project. There was some
discussion of the role of the Board and a draft Resolution making minor but
necessary changes to our role will be discussed later in the meeting.
8. Staff Update
a. Golf Course Reconstruction Update.
• Staff did not have a formal update from LU to share but made the following
comments:
o Joe estimated that we are 3 weeks behind schedule and we are unlikely to
complete the seeding by Sept 21. Work last week was delayed due to the
rain and this may delay the possible opening date in 2015 although the
winter weather will be a more dominant factor. David Deans proposed that
the application of fungicide could delay the grass going dormant and thus
expedite the grow -in. Covers will be purchased to be ready to cover the
greens.
o The fairways may be a bigger concern as they cannot be covered. The
fairways are being graded in preparation for laying sod.
o Not all greens have been seeded yet — holes 1, 2 3 and 8 have still to be
completed.
PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT • 749 MAIN STREET • LOUISVILLE, CO 80027
(303) 335-4735 • FAX (303) 335.4738
www.Iouisvil leco.gov
PARKS RECREATION SENIOR SERVICES 3 OPEN SPACE FORESTRY TRAILS GOLF
