Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
September 25, 2014
Andy Johnson, architect for the project, presented for the applicant. He spoke directly
to slides on details of the structure and the proposed additions /upgrades.
Public Comment
Harry Ramsey Thomas and Cynthia Thomas spoke. They stated they are very excited
about landmarking the structure to preserve the historical building and social history.
Commissioner Questions
Echohawk asked if the horizontal slider window will be replaced with a double hung.
Johnson stated that is correct.
La Grave asked staff if they could curate the photos a little better because they don't
show much of the detail we are discussing about.
Johnson stated there should be existing photos in the packet.
La Grave asked for the north facing facade.
Trice displayed a photo of the north facing image.
La Grave asked for more details on what is being demolished and what is being added.
Johnson spoke towards the photo of the existing structure to give a detailed discussion
of what is being removed and what is being added.
Watson stated he was happy they are proposing to remove the asbestos siding and
replacing it with stucco. He also recommended future submittals should include a roof
plan.
Johnson spoke directly to the north facade and gave details in his design sense,
especially towards the street facing facades.
La Grave stated he is most concerned about the Lafayette facing facade.
Watson agreed, primarily because of the kink in the roof. He stated he felt it is a pretty
tall wall. He added the exterior of the house is what is important to the public, primarily
since there is a grant involved.
Johnson stated there are elements of the existing structure that lend to the design of the
proposed finished design. He added the grant is primarily for the front porch and the
existing structure.
Watson asked if they have construction drawings done yet.
Johnson said not yet, but they are getting close.
