For non-Louisville residents, a small
administration fee of $10 per cubic foot will be charged at the time of pickup.
Biosolids are used as a soil amendment or conditioner. It contains important nutrients to
help your soil to grow healthy plants in flower beds, lawns, and other vegetated areas.
Louisville's biosolids are a naturally developed product, produced by air drying and
composting of wastewater solids. The biosolids meet stringent state and EPA regulations in
order to be classified as "Class A" and enable the City to recycle this valuable resource through
its reuse program. Specific lab analysis information and application rates for the biosolids is available from the
Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Biosolids are available for pick up at the Wastewater Treatment Plant 7:00 AM— 3:30 PM, 7 days per week. The mulch is available at the City's Branch Recycling
Site off Highway 42 on Empire Road. This site is just north of the Louisville Cemetery. Mulch can be
loaded Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The current stockpile of mulch was produced from the
large amount of tree debris resulting from the 2003 spring snowstorms.
The Department of Land Management encourages Louisville residents to mulch their trees, shrubs, and
applicable gardens to reap the many benefits mulch provides. Later this spring, the Department of Land
Management will conduct a Mulch Give-Away (date yet to be determined). During this one-day event, citizens
will have the opportunity to have their trucks and/or trailers loaded by city staff. Residents in need of large
amounts of mulch are the focus of this give-away. Look for further announcements detailing this event!
THE BENEFITS OF MULCHING YOUR TREES
ulching offers many advantages to your trees by replicating the natural system from which so many of
_Vlour trees have been removed. Mulch helps conserve water by retarding soil moisture evaporation which
is critical during hot, dry weather especially where frequent watering is not possible or practical. Mulching
provides an environment that aids the growth of beneficial microorganisms and it provides better soil temperature
and moisture control for your trees. Mulching also protects trees and shrubs from mechanical injury caused by
mowers and string line trimmers. , .,f ',
Placing mulch around the base of your trees will result A i 1 '
in less competition from the grass.
