Notes from golf course public meeting November 15 2014
GCAB Members Present: Lisa Norgard, Dennis Maloney, Perry Nelson, Sandy Stewart
Council Member: Jay Keany
City Staff: Joe Stevens, Allan Gill, David Dean
Landscapes Unlimited Staff: Jeff Matthews, Chris Lewis (Broadlands GC and Agronomist)
Members of Public: 24 golfers and citizens signed the attendance register plus many others who
did not sign in.
Summary
Joe Stevens gave the following update on progress. See also the document handed out at the
meeting and attached at the end of these notes.
• All greens have been seeded and the majority of greens have been mowed several times.
Several greens have been covered to provide a greenhouse effect to promote growth.
• We are still tracking to a plan that will re -open the golf course in late spring 2015 (by June 30)
• Joe introduced David Dean as our Golf Superintendent. David was hired two months ago and
he previously worked at the Club at Cordillera in Vail. He progressed through a series of
promotions starting on their Short Course and ultimately as acting Course Superintendent at
the Hale Irwin designed Mountain Course.
• Joe also introduced Chris Lewis, a Landscapes Unlimited employee who is the Golf
Superintendent at Broadlands. Chris is a qualified agronomist and is working in tandem with
David to ensure a successful grow -in period. Chris brings a wealth of experience in managing
a golf course in the local environment while David brings experience from the harsher
conditions of a mountain course.
• Joe introduced Jeff Matthews who is the on -site Project Manager for Landscapes Unlimited
and has worked on the project from the start. Jeff feels we are in a good position to achieve
the planned late spring opening date. Some loose ends remain to be completed. The three
bridges are all installed but work is needed to complete the approaches to them. Seeding
needs to be completed on #14 fairway and on the punchbowl green.
• Next Spring, we will start the 3 — 5 year plan to plant new trees. The overall tree plan is
published on the City website and staking for the new trees will be placed in early spring so
inputs can be obtained from adjacent homeowners.
• 38 trees will be planted on the berm between HVVY36 and the 16th hole at the expense of
CDOT.
Joe then opened the meeting for questions:
Q: given that the initial project plan anticipated all seeding complete in September and we are
now in mid - November with some work still incomplete, what is the confidence in meeting the
late spring date?
A: assuming reasonable weather in late Winter /early spring, 90 days should be adequate time
for any remaining areas to germinate and be robust enough for play. LU will be doing "dormant
seeding" through the winter and will treat this like a recovery program for winter desiccation.
The course will be almost entirely over seeded in early March. Chris Lewis is very familiar with
the local weather patterns and this approach has been proven at Broadlands. Seeding will use
3
