<br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />To: Historic Preservation Commission Members <br /> <br />From: Department of Planning and Building Safety <br /> <br />Subject: Preservation Master Plan Discussion – HPC Training, Tools, and <br /> Processes <br /> <br />Date: February 9, 2015 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Purpose: <br />To seek input from all HPC members in order to assist the Program Description/ <br />Assessment and Goal/ Policy Setting subcommittees in their tasks for the Preservation <br />Master Plan. <br /> <br />Background: <br /> As per local ordinance, the HPC is responsible for: <br />- protection and preservation of the city's historic and cultural heritage, <br />- enhancement of property values, and the stabilization of historic neighborhoods; <br />- increase of economic and financial benefits through the city's attractions to <br />tourists and visitors; and <br />- provision of educational opportunities to increase public appreciation of <br />Louisville's unique heritage <br /> <br />The HPC also has certain powers and duties related to the City of Louisville’s CLG <br />status (some repetition of above). These include: <br />- review of landmark and historic district nominations and making <br />recommendations to City Council regarding designation; <br />- review of alterations, demolitions, moving of landmarks/ buildings in historic <br />districts; <br />- advise/ assist owners of historic properties on physical and financial aspects of <br />preservation (renovation, rehabilitation, and reuse, nomination to NR/ SR) <br />- develop/ assist with public education (walking tours, brochures, plaques, <br />lectures, conferences); <br />- conduct surveys of historic areas to determine historic significance and prioritize <br />nomination and designation; <br />- advise City Council on matters related to preserving the historic character of the <br />City; and <br />- pursue financial assistance for preservation-related programs <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Department of Planning and Building Safety <br /> <br />
