Ctyof
Louisville
COLORADO - SINCE 1878
VI. The 2015 Seed Starting talk was discussed. Approximately 38-40 people attended. New
topics suggested for the 2016 event: perennials or very early vegetables. A thank you
note with a $50.00 gift certificate to Target was given to presenter, Janis Kieft,
Horticulturalist and Seed Buyer for Botanical Interests.
VII. 2015 Arbor Day Planting will be April 18th, 9-12. Planting will be on Via Appia
between Eldorado and McCaslin. Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops have been invited to
do the planting of 22 trees, purchased through a $6000.00 grant received. Parking will
be at the Police Station.
The joint Cultural Council and Louisville Arboretum event at the Arboretum has been
scheduled for the Thursday before Labor Day, September 3ra
VIII. Board Requests for Funding. Dean asked for requests to bring to City Council for
budgeting. Items discussed: renovation of the Police station landscape , improving
mowing and weed control at the Arboretum and city wide, more tree pruning and
replacement, more planting of annuals and perennials in the `Gateway' beds. The Board
recommended doubling the horticulture budget from $2500 to $5000 in 2016. The CIP
budget includes $15,000 for tree replacement, the Bathroom Design and Build in 2015,
Xeric garden renovation in 2016. Bob Burnhardt is the horticulturalist. HFAB
recommended an additional horticulturalist be added. Dean brought up another budget
issue — Under pressure from Open Space activists, Council is looking for a formula for
adjusting/reducing the amount of money being used for park maintenance from the
Open Space budget. The 2015 Council Study session will be at the end of May.
IX. Helburg Memorial Initial Plan. The proposed Police Officers' Memorial garden was
reviewed by the Board. The concern was the lack of an over-all plan of landscaping for
the Police Station. Groundbreaking will be May 15th, with the goal of dedicating the
park by October 28th, 2015, the 100th anniversary of Victor Helburg's death. The
fountain may be installed at a later date.
X. Front Street — The Board had no objections to the landscape plan and expansion of
parking adjacent to Sweet Cow/Lucky Pie.
XI. Agenda Items for meeting on Thursday, May 7 : 1. Design/Build architect for the
Arboretum bathrooms; Items for the study session with Council.
XII. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.
PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT • 749 MAIN STREET • LOUISVILLE, CO 80027
(303) 335-4735 • FAX (303) 335-4738
www.Iouisvilleco.gov
PARKS RECREATION SENIOR SERVICES OPEN SPACE FORESTRY TRAILS GOLF
