ALLRED&ASSOCIATES
Architecture • Planning • Interior Design
June 22, 2015
Horticulture Forestry Advisory Board (HFAB) Meeting
Re: Heritage Park and Recreation Center Campus Restroom Design.
Function:
1. The restroom design incorporates functional economy by utilizing a back to back fixture layout
for water and waste.
2. The plumbing fixtures are on interior walls reducing the possibility of freezing of any water
lines.
3. The entries are across from each other so that a person waiting for children coming out the
bathroom can watch both exits.
4. Storage is included in the back for equipment related to the Arboretum and skate park.
5. The mechanical room will include the water heater and other relevant equipment pertaining to
the restrooms.
6. Clerestory windows provide natural lighting reducing the need for light fixtures to turn on
during the day.
7. Overhangs provide shelter and place to grow plants and provide seating for small groups.
8. Stone benches provide a planter and a place for seating.
Form:
1. The shed form is reminiscent of coal mining buildings which often incorporated rusted tin and
single sloped shed roofs.
2. The heavy timbers are reminiscent of coal mining materials. The trussed timbers were very
typical at the bottom story of the mining buildings. Coal from conveyor belts would come out
of the mines and drop coal in railroad coal cars under these type over hangs.
3. The stone facade represents the rugged mining material prevalent in mining through bedrock. It
is a contrast with the smooth metal roofing material.
4. The roof is corten steel reminiscent of rusting tin metal. The steel on the side is corten sheet
shingles reminiscent of tin shingling on temporary mining structure.
4
