Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
January 16, 2008

. HPC review of demolition requests without a formal permit process when a
project is referred from the Planning Department as a part of a larger PUD or
building project;
. HPC full commission review of a demolition request without the initial
subcommittee process if so requested by the applicant.
Muth is requesting direction from the Commission.

Muckle expressed concern that this might diminish the authority of the HPC.

Muth noted that none of this is meant to change the authority of the HPC for a demolition
review. Only make the demolition review process work more cohesively with the
planning process.

Lewis asked what next steps would be.

McMenamin said it looked fine to him.

Muth said she will request the City Attorney make the changes t rdinance and then
a redlined version of the ordinance will come back to t HPC for review.

As the applicant for 916 Main Street was in the audience, embers moved this item to
discuss it next.

Planning Department Referrals - 916 M

Muth presented the proposed changes to ing building at 916 Main Street. She
noted that as they owner has not yet subml a demolition permit, any and all
discussion of this item must be Ii .ted to the Commission's comments on the new
building. The Commission canno ve a discussion of the historic merits of the existing
building at this time as it woulCllH! omise the established subcommittee process for
demolition reviews. That discussion ill take place when and if a demolition permit is
pulled for the project.

Lewis asked the
proposal.

ant to consider the nearby buildings as they relate to the new

Jean Morgan, 1131 ,Juce Street, asked the applicant to consider saving the historic
fals nt of the building and stepping back the second story.

re d with the suggestion that the second story be set back.

Muckle oted that neighboring Joe's Market is set to be landmarked, so saving the
fayade of this building and stepping back the second story would continue the historic
fabric across those two buildings. She felt that doing this would be of value to the
community. Muckle asked if the interior of the building will change.

Ronda Grassi, 916 Main Street, said the interior will stay the same. In fact, Grassi stated
she has done a great deal to keep the historic interior intact and plans to keep that
historic aspect of the building with the addition. She added that the historic fayade of the
building is not in particularly good condition.
