<br />Historic Preservation Commission <br />Meeting Minutes <br />January 16, 2008 <br />Page 3 of 12 <br /> <br />Jean Morgan, 1131 Spruce Street, stated that the wording of the bond issue did not <br />include the word demolition. She wondered if it would be possible to do renovations on <br />other parts of the building first while determining if the fayade could be kept. She added <br />that she would be uncomfortable voting for another bond issue for the BVSD given how <br />the money from this one is being spent and asked that BVSD to be respectful of the fact <br />that the money for the project is coming from the community. <br /> <br />Janet Stonington, 1101 Grant Avenue, asked if the decision was final or is there <br />anything that can be done to save the building at this point in the process. <br /> <br />Kathy Valentine, 1101 Grant Avenue, reported that she called school board <br />let them know of her support for saving the building and board members told <br />not know about the proposed demolition. <br /> <br /> <br />Barb Hesson, 411 County Road, stated that she grew up in Lou. <br />building means a great deal to the community. Lewis asked Orr what options may be vailable at this point in the <br />project. <br /> <br />Orr noted he had no formal presentation. .ntroduced Susan Cousins, <br />Communications Specialist for the Bond and Adele Wilson, of SlaterPaul <br />Architects. He stated that after the comm t at the January 8, 2008 school board <br />meeting, the board directed staff to explain considerations were made for the <br />preservation of the 1939 building. the renovation process. <br /> <br />Orr gave a history of the bond nd stated that in 2003 the school district completed <br />a district-wide assessment of facill . For each building they reviewed facility condition, <br />program compatibility, hletic/playground needs, and technology needs. At each school <br />deficiencies were ide ed and then charettes were held to determine what the <br />community's values an ants were for the school. When the LMS community was <br />asked to prioritize their d ires for the building, preservation was not a top priority. <br /> <br />Orr noted <br />would like <br />Master Plan f <br /> <br /> <br />bond for the project is not enough to do everything the community <br />ed that the bond language was tied directly to the approved Education <br />school. <br /> <br />Orr reported that in February of 2007 community members were invited to give input on <br />the school's needs. After that meeting, the Design Advisory Team (DA T) was <br />established to oversee the project. The DA T met 10-11 times before approving the <br />proposed plan. In addition, BVSD staff met with City staff, parents, and students to <br />discuss the needs of the project. On September 18, 2007 the community was invited to <br />see the plan that the DA T approved. <br /> <br />Orr noted that educational functionality specifications are adopted by the district and <br />they set the specifications for the building and that drives the design process. The intent <br />was for the DA T process to be inclusive and they thought information about the project <br />
