Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
July 8th 2015
that she liked the trail direction arrows that pointed "up" for straight ahead. Ember
presented a logo button with property names and an Open Space logo that could go on
the poles. There were a few changes of final sign criteria, some small reviews to
mapping, and staff is working with Public Works to standardize Open Space Stop and
Yield signs with Public Works' program, and a "Keep Exploring" signs for entry into
adjacent cities' properties.
B. Ranger /Ambassador Position Report
Ember reported the May 5 -June 18 public contact data for Ranger Tom Davinroy.
Tom gave a "trailhead talk" at Davidson Mesa and he ended up hanging out for three
hours as 23 citizens approached him. Ember showed Ranger Tom's education posters.
Tom will lead "Hiking with Ranger Tom" hikes this summer. Tom has taken over a few of
Catherine's volunteer and education programs.
Tom was the first staff member to spot the landslide at Coyote Run Open Space.
The soil that moved was up to seven feet deep. The original field Consultant estimated
$20k to review and comment on the slope, but declared no immediate threat. Staff was
requested to get additional cost estimates due to the cost. Malcolm and Joe are
reviewing the new cost estimate proposals and staff is waiting for approval before
moving forward. Other engineering team will do mapping analysis, including data on any
mine shafts in the area. Jeff expressed some concern about the slow speed of the
process addressing this issue, saying that many citizens have expressed their curiosity
and concerns about the slide.
Tom has also met lots of photographers on Open Space property who have
shared their photos with him. Tom has spotted burrowing owls nesting at Davidson
Mesa. Tom is emphasizing the educational and ambassador aspects of the job, and
downplaying the enforcement aspect, for now. Missy asked about Tom's time and
whether some of his time could be put toward ecological mapping, since it was identified
by the board as a high priority item.
C. Directors Response to OSAB Recommendations Regarding: Draft Parks &
Recreation Memorial Tree and Bench Program
Joe Stevens agreed with all of the board's June recommendations on his draft
document on Open Space and Parks Memorial Bench Program and will incorporate all
of them as related to Open Space.
D.
