Library Board of Trustees
Meeting Minutes —DRAFT
July 9, 2015
added to the Children's Services Division Policy. There was little discussion and the
board unanimously agreed to adopt the changes recommended by Library staff.
B. Upcoming City Council Study Session
Beth reported that this year's session is on September 8. After a brief discussion, the
Board agreed to use a similar format to last year and Alicia, Jeannie, and Paul will put
together the PowerPoint and make the presentation.
VIII. Ongoing Business
A. Demographic Data Analysis (P. Karlzen)
Paul once again attempted to show the data via special software but the projector
system would not work. Paul then provided a brief summary and passed around his
laptop to illustrate. Paul cited three areas in the Louisville /Superior where Library
membership was low: 1) mobile home park along Via Appia; 2) new NorthEnd
apartments near the Louisville Alfalfa's market; and 3) Summit Apartments in the Rock
Creek area of Superior.
The Board discussed various options for outreach including bookmarks in Little Library
books and at schools during school visits. Beth noted that Library staff does visit schools
at the beginning of the school year, but they are unable to get to each and every one.
Beth asked if any Board members would be willing to staff back -to- school nights and
hand out bookmarks, brochures, library card applications, and so forth. Jeannie, Alicia,
Sherri, and Helana volunteered. Beth will work with staff to obtain schedules for the
back -to- school events.
1) Update on visit to Balfour (J. Shuman)
Jeannie reported that she and Beth visited the community and spoke with the Life
Enrichment Coordinator there about several programs including On The Same
Page, the availability of book club kits, as well as the partnership with the
Colorado Talking Book Library. Beth and Jeannie will continue to work with
Balfour and Library staff will go there to speak with residents.
B. Community Update Newsletter Insert (S. Lancton)
Sherri will work with Karen and Beth on content for the next insert.
C. On The Same Page
Beth noted that all the books have been checked out. A hospice nurse involved in the
program is delivering flyers at doctors' offices. There has also been good coverage in
the local news media and lots of positive comments. Alicia, Sherri, Jeannie, and Helana
have passed out rack cards in the community.
D. Summer Reading
This year there were 1400 children signed up for the program, which is an all -time
record. Teens made a strong showing with 200 participants, and there were 100 adults
registered. There were also 38 teen volunteers for the Children's Summer Reading
Program and a department intern who acted as the volunteer coordinator.
E. City Council Report: H. Dalton
Hank noted that City Council has not been in session since June 9th but that the South
Boulder Road Small Area Plan is an upcoming issue.
