Open Space Advisory Board Meeting Minutes (Continued- Public Comments)
To: Nickie Dumke
Subject: RE: Decision of City of Louisville
In regards to the 10 foot space "granted" by the city, I do think it would be better than
nothing. Keep in mind though that your yard was infiltrated due to the combo of ground
cover touching your fence and a snow layer providing them ground cover in your lawn.
The voles will always want to keep out of sight, so trails in your lawn will indeed be
discouraged by a 10 ft. band of trimmed vegetation during the warm months. However,
if the snow pack reaches that level again, and the voles are still only 10 ft from your
home at the end of the fall, then I would not be surprised if they were to enter your
yard.
To make a short point I think it is worth the effort to trim what they will allow. It may
not be "foolproof ", but will still go a ways to preventing trails in your yard. Also, if the
neighbors don't trim, you will be the least tempting home on the block, sad but true.
From: Chris Prah
Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2012 9:49 AM
To: nickiedumke @gmail.com
Subject: Voles
Hi Nickie,
I appreciate you taking the time to write to us to inform us about your concerns. I apologize in
taking longer than expected to respond to you. We finally got a chance to took a look at your
backyard and the open space (North Open Space) that backs up to your property. I did see the
marks in your yard from the vole activity.
I understand your concerns regarding damage to your yard and health concerns. At this point
in time, for various reasons, we are not mowing open space boundaries along private property
fence lines. However, you and any other resident is allowed to mow out from your property
edge 10 feet onto open space to provide your own buffer. Hopefully, this might help to
mitigate the damage the voles have caused.
8
