Howard wondered what Scripps Howard was going to do to ensure that
the City of Louisville does not fall behind in the new technology
and does not receive only secondary service.

Griffin stated that they are entering a period of time where the
technology is changing rapidly. One component is equipment
compatibility analysis. He explained that the cable television
operators and the home video manufacturers are attempting to come
up with equipment that would be compatible with the fiber optic,
super highway, telecommunications infrastructure. The system here
is already being serviced by fiber optics.

Howard wondered when the citizens of Louisville would start seeing
a decreased cost, if they've already turned in their boxes.

Griffin:

It'll all be reflected on their
October statement. It's $2 per
month. One of the other savings of
this Cable Act is fees for multiple
outlets. Those are now free, with
the exception that, if you need a
converter, then there would be the
$2 charge on that. The charges will
be clearly shown on the billing.

Hornbostel was concerned about the maintenance of the equipment
Scripps Howard already has. She wondered what the life of a lock
box is.

Griffin:

Our technicians have been instructed
on that, if on a service call and
they come across one of the SMZ
model converters, they're to replace
that with either the DP7 or SA8600
converter. We're trying to get
those in the field, as fast as we
can.

Hornbostel:

I had a box that was rather hot and
I called up. I had to beg this guy
to come out. He said, "Are you sure
it's burning?" There should have to
be a question? If you think a box
is burning, does my house have to
burn down before they will even look
at it? He finally came out and
asked me to turn it on a long time.
He told me that it has been on a
long time (that's why it's hot). I
told him that I don't want this
thing in my house, if it's going to
burn. After quite a bit, he finally

10
