Chester Street, Lafayette, CO
I am a member of the His oric Preservation Board (HPB) of Lafayette. I am here to talk with you
about an initiative happening in Lafayette, and also to solicit a bit of information and advice. In
April, the HPB had a meeting and workshop with our City Council and during that meeting, we
expressed concern about some things happening in Old Town Lafayette, especially during this
current building boom. We are concerned at how easy it is for historic properties to be acquired,
scraped flat, and replaced with large moderate construction that has nothing in common with the
character of the existing neighborhood. In the end, the City Council expressed a certain level of
support but said they needed to hear public comment. The HPB has had discussions internally
about our priorities and we are about to schedule a series of meetings with the public. The goal
will be to gather public input about historic preservation and come up with a clear plan of action,
backed by public support, to create specific set of changes to Municipal Code in the name of
historic preservation. In doing research, I found the City of Louisville has a lot of information
regarding what the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) has in place. I am impressed
because I characterize your preservation efforts as 10-20 years ahead of Lafayette. It is my goal
to play catch-up. You have an Overlay District that has been in place for 21 years.
