Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
December 19, 2016
Discussion/Direction: Wayfinding
As part of the Small Area Plan processes, the City has been working with ArtHouse Design to
engage the community and develop a draft wayfinding plan. An initial draft of the program is
attached. Staff's intent is to review this draft with City Boards and Commissions before bringing
a final proposal back to City Council.
Design
ArtHouse Design presented three sign "families" to the community during the Small Area Plan
process. The attached draft sign package is in response to the public comments. ArtHouse
Design also collaborated with designer for the Open Space, Parks & Trails Wayfinding Plan to
ensure the designs were compatible.
This matches the Acme Mine sign and interpretative signs along the Hutchinson development.
This is the plan that Balfour will use for the Hecla Mine interpretative sign.
Approved Funding for Wayfinding
The 2016 budget includes funding for fabrication and installation of an initial phase of sign
installation. Based on the approved budget and cost estimates, Staff developed a Phase 1
implementation plan. Draft location plans for Phase 1 along with the full draft sign package
(Phase I and II) are attached.
t411 %
Questions for HPC
1. Are there any concerns regarding the proposed Phase 1 sign locations?
2. Are there any additional locations that HPC would recommend?
_AIV
Fahey asks if the rest of the signs in the city are going to be changed to match this, such as the
Museum sign and parking signs. I think it makes sense to have everything consistent.
Trice says not the Museum sign and parking signs. The Downtown This Way finger -pointing
signs or the circular signs will be changed. The entry and directional signs will be updated. It is
helpful when working with developers to have standards ready regarding interpretative signs.
Fahey asks about trail markings.
Trice says Open Space and Trails have their own signage. There is overlap since the
consultants work in the same downtown Denver building. They have worked together to use
same materials, circular pattern, and similar font and style.
Fahey asks if they have the same color coding for different areas of town.
Trice says no. Theirs are based on trails whereas these are based on districts.
Cyndi Thomas says I like it.
Stewart asks about materials. Asks about beacon and if it lights up.
Trice says I don't think the materials to be used are set. A lot of it has to do with final budgeting
and cost estimates. The beacon can or cannot light up depending on where it is located.
Originally, there were three different sign families submitted. This is a combination of feedback
and two sign families.
Cyndi Thomas asks if there is only funding for Phase 1, and then work through the rest.
Trice says yes. We hope to have funding for Phase 1 that will roll over. The two main things
people are interested in are the entry signs and Downtown directional signs.
Stewart says for this commission, the question might be that where a sign says Downtown,
should it say Historic Downtown. When travelling, I am attracted to historic downtown signs.
Trice says there is money in the budget for interpretative signs. The HPC would use the same
plan, but they would be funded by the City instead of a developer.
