PAGE TEN
SUBJECT: DISCUSSION -BUILDING CODE BOARD OF APPEALS -GREEN
BUILDING
DATE: JUNE 24, 2008
Safety Division staff would accept any greenn building program from the above mentioned or
similar type programs. That would give the contractor and client the option of which
program best suits their green building. Thf~ Building Safety Division staff would only be
required to receive a certification application at the time of permit application and then a
compliance certification before a Certificate of Occupancy. New homes are built with such a
higher level of efficiency that any of the programs would be sufficient for compliance.
Commercial
The Board of Appeals believes that commercial construction is where the city needs
to focus its attention. Currently the Chief Building Official is part of the Consortium of Cities
Commercial Green Building Committee. This committee is attempting to develop county wide
commercial green building guidelines. They are being developed from the LEED 2.2
commercial guideline. The Board of Appeals would like to continue to monitor the work of
the consortium and ultimately determine if this is the program for the City of Louisville. The
consortium guideline will be some type of points program. This process should be complete
in the fall of 2008.
Additions and Remodel
This is a more difficult issue to addrE~ss and will take more discussion and effort. The
questions to be considered are: at what square footage and at what level of compliance
does the City require current or modified green building practices? Does the City require an
energy audit when any additional work is done? Is this an area the City wants to administer?
Second only to commercial buildings these older structures are the least energy efficient
structures in the City of Louisville.
