City Council Study Session Summary July 8, 2008 Page 2 of6 Mayor Pro Tem Sheri Marsella requested those in attendance introduce themselves. Connie Howes, Chair of SAB gave a PowerPoint presentation. Ms. Howes presented the Elder Friendly Model that the SAB has adopted which includes 4 parts: 1) Addresses Basic Needs 2) Promotes Social and Civic Engagement 3) Optimizes Physical and Mental Health and Well Being 4) Maximizes Independence for Frail and Disabled. Ms. Howes also presented the SAB's vision statement and the mission statement. Claire Floyd discussed what SAB is doing for seniors regarding housing. Carol Purfurst discussed the Brooks Cafe meal site program and passed out July 2008 menu and activities for seniors. Ms. Purfurst encouraged City Council to come have lunch with the seniors at the Brooks Cafe. Ms. Floyd also discussed the Intergenerational Program that she has started and hopes to expand with in the future. Linda Jackson discussed the Social and Engagement projects that she oversees. Ms. Jackson talked about 'Chit Chat Circle' which gives seniors the opportunity to get together and have discussions and also talked about the trips that are offered to seniors to participate in. Ms. Purfurst discussed the Physical and Mental Health and Well-being part of the model. Ms. Purfurst said that the Recreation and Senior Center went through an age-friendly assessment and met all the requirements. Mr. Purfurst explained that the assessment also allows for improvements to make the Center more age- friendly. Mr. Purfurst said that the SAB will be starting a social dance group. Councilor Dave Clabots, Council liaison to the SAB, stated that the Board has done a good job and that he enjoyed working with them. Councilor Clabots said regarding housing the things that the SAB is looking at is housing with main floor master bedrooms, minimizing the number steps, wider doors and affordability. Mayor Pro Tem Marsella said that the Louisville Housing Authority is concerned about affordable housing in Louisville and more housing for 'empty nesters'. Claudia Low, staff liaison to SAB said that when Boulder County came out with the County's Strategic Plan that the SAB stepped up to the plate and have been making great strides incorporating the plan.
