SINKCOMBSDETHLEFS
ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
Exterior Building Design
The building's exterior design and materials complement other municipal facilities. Durable and
quality materials such as masonry veneer, rainscreen systems, and glazed curtainwall are the
primary facade elements.
The west facade's ground level pedestrian way incorporates masonry wall sections with
architectural details, along with glazed openings. There are also vertical wood sunshades at
the ground level which provide further articulation and dimensional character. Interior space
program elements along the west facade include Child Watch, Preschool Classrooms,
Natatorium, and Fitness Areas. The Fitness Area facade is primarily electrochromatic glazing,
which is tinted and actively changes the amount of tint based on the sun exposure at different
times of the day. Positioning these functions on the west side of the building will enhance view
corridors to open space and mountain vistas.
The south facade comprises the two-level Natatorium and Turf Gymnasium spaces. Positioning
the Natatorium on the south side of the building will enhance view corridors to open space
vistas. The Natatorium facade is primarily glazed curtainwall and masonry veneer, with wood
columns supporting a large roof overhang. There is also a freestanding masonry screen wall in
front of a portion of the Natatorium's exterior wall. The ground level curtainwall mullion
spacing is pedestrian -scale, while the upper glazed sections are more monumental. There are
also large glazed openings to the exterior to provide an indoor/outdoor experience. The
substantial roof overhang and masonry screen wall will provide shade on the interior and
exterior of the building. Likewise, this large overhang and additional lower canopy elements
will provide shade and shelter to those occupying the outdoor patio space. The Turf
Gymnasium is primarily masonry veneer with high clerestory sections of windows. Like the
west facade, the masonry walls of the south facade will include architectural detailing to
provide a pedestrian -oriented design.
The east facade contains the existing Gymnasium and new Turf Gymnasium. Both will be a
masonry veneer system with architectural detailing. The existing Gymnasium will be reskinned
with a masonry veneer system to align the new addition's materials.
The north facade contains the existing Gymnasium and Senior Center, and the new building
expansion. The existing Gymnasium will be reskinned with a masonry veneer system to align
the new addition's materials.
At the Senior Center's north, east and west facades, the existing exterior walls will be reskinned
with both masonry veneer and a rainscreen system. The existing blue metal panel mansard
roof sections will be demolished and replaced with a parapet wall system incorporating new
facade materials. Additionally, new wood trellis elements will frame the existing entryway.
Site and building signage design is underway and will be included in a subsequent submittal.
5H
