s
12/4/84 Page -20-
the Library Board's last meeting in November
and mentioned the possibility of expanding
City Hall to the south. This would create
6600 sq.ft, of additional space, 4000 sq.ft.
to the library and the rest to other city
departments, i.e. Police and Finance. The
cost for the Library was estimated at approx:i.-
mately $400,000. Construction costs for 40~4~
sq, ft. for the Library would be $320,000 •,-
design fees and furnishings. This compares
with $646,000 for constructing a new buildinG~
of only 6,000 sq.ft. In addition they would
need to purchase land which would be an adc~.~•
tional 250,000 sq.ft. Since the expansion
would be much more cast effective the Boarc•
wished to get Council's comments on it.
6400 sq.ft. would probably serve the Libre:::
for about 10 years. They were concerned G. :'.
the comments that had been made in regard
to revenues that will be coming in, in the
future and that they have something. Since
they are aware of Council's concerns over
future revenues - ideally they would like a
10,000 sq.ft. building, which is what they
originally recommended and appreciate Council's
recommendation that it be a high priority far
Capital Improvements. They are also committed
to remaining in the downtown area; they want
to be part of the renovation that is going
on. The Library Board does want a commitmez~:i.
from Council for the expansion of 4,000 sq.f~~.
for the Library when the expansion does occur .
Ms. iJauss stated that they will be contacting
a representative from the State Library and
will discuss the situation with him for his
comments.
The :3300 sq.ft. basement storage space would
be for the above mentioned departments; not
for lthe Library alone and this cost has not
been calculated at this time.
:ouncilman Luce Commented that one of the things he would
like to propose, with Council's concurrence,
is since they are a member of the Central
Colorado Library system, it was his under-
stanciing that the Director of that system
had quite a bit of international expertiese
in tE_rms of library planning, facility con-
struction, etc. He requested that the Library
Boarci contact the Director of COLS and request
his office, as part of the contract services
