Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
July 17, 2017
Page 7of11
Option 2: The HPC has not discussed this option. The property is just north of Parkview along
Main Street which is a vacated City right of way. It has a ditch going through it in a concrete
channel. It is a 60' right -of way. Both cabins could be located there. There would be room for a
plaza area and other amenities associated with the cabins. The location is further away from
Downtown. It is within the funding area.
Option 3: Move the cabins to the Public Works city shops to be stored temporarily. This is in
anticipation of the Historic Preservation Tax being continued and providing more location
options.
Koertje says regarding the Main Street Option #2, is there any concern about the ditch flooding
or overflowing and damaging the cabins.
Trice says Public Works and the Parks Department have not mentioned any concerns. The
channel seems to be holding the water.
Ulm asks if the channel is storm or irrigation.
Trice says I do not know. I believe it is stormwater but I Will get further cia
Public Comment:
Jean Morgan, 1131 Spruce Street, Louisville, CO
I would vote for Highway 42 and Pine Street because I think it would make a great entry
statement into Louisville from the east. Cabin #2 could be unfinished on the inside, but be a
drive-by look to the outside. I can envision it being an entry statement with a restored coal car
and a mule pulling the coal car. I think we can handle all three as an entry statement. It would
keep the cabin in the Miners Field neighborhood. Emmit Trott built the cabins and lived at the
end of the block in the old Victorian home that still stands. He had the Trott Trading Post. I think
this would have pleased him. When the homes along Pine Street stopped becoming homes, it
was zoned commercial. People may be able to park at the commercial outlets and walk down to
look at them. I agree that school children would probably not go there.
I hate to see the cabins split up, but I think Cabin #1 would look great at the John Breaux Park.
It could be finished on the inside and available to the public. It could be available for tours and
public events. It could be open during Farmer's Market or Street Faire or Labor Day Parade. It is
a busy location with good security.
Even though I'd love to see them together, I would hate to see them set in French Town. They
are Miners Field cabins and it is best to keep them as close to Miners Field as we can. I'm not
sure it is a secure location because of the ditch which I think is the old Davidson Ditch. I think it
is an irrigatio ch. I wonder if it could be a location for the Hecla Casino. We might want to
save this loca •r something other than the cabins.
I would hate to see ins go to the Public Works shops because it would be another move
for those cabins. I'd li` o see them set down and placed. My two favorites are Highway 42 and
Pine Street and John Breaux Park.
Commission Discussion and Comments:
Fahey says I agree with what Ms. Morgan just said. I am not in favor of the Main Street
location, partly because of the danger from the ditch but also because it is not part of anything
else. They would be by themselves. It would make more sense to have Cabin #1 at John
Breaux Park and be refurbished and open to the public. We could do historic events, base
Museum programs there, and start walking tours. There are all kinds of ways we could use it as
