Board of Adjustment
Meeting Minutes
August 16, 2017
Page 7of8
Fromm said that there was not.
DeJong asked if Fromm knew who Mike Barns was.
Fromm said he does not know him and that he does not know his address.
Campbell asked what the size of his residence is.
Fromm said it is approximately 1200 square feet.
Williams asked if anyone knew what the relation was for the email Mike Barns submitted for the
hearing.
Ritchie said that staff reached out to him and asked if he would list his address so staff would
know how the variance affected him and his property, but staff never received the address.
Public Comment in Favor:
None heard.
Public Comment Against:
Mike Barns (emailed on 08/16/17)
Below represented the email Barns submitted to the planning department:
"Dear Planning Division,
After speaking with the planning department, we wish to express that the proposed variance is
not compatible with the neighborhood. We feel that the added coverage to 24% and going 2
stories will add a lot of mass to the site. We understand that this is not a hardship variance.
We love the local neighborhood because it is not crowded with overbuilt lots, and hope that you
will agree to oppose and deny the change at 511 Adams Ave Variance.
Thank you for your time."
Mike Barns
Saratoga Subdivision
Summary and request by Staff and Applicant:
None heard.
Closed Public Hearing and discussion by Commission:
DeJong believed that staff's analysis and presentation was complete. He agreed that the
applicant met all six criteria.
Ewy said she supports staff's analysis and approves the application.
Williams found all six criteria met and will be supporting the application.
Meseck also found that all criteria were met. He said he would be voting in favor.
Campbell said he will not be voting in favor of this application because the hardship was a
health reason, which has nothing to do with the lot. He said he is inclined to disagree because
the hardship is personal as opposed to being about the lot.
Levinson said he agrees with Campbell's point about the personal hardship. The overall
request though is not outrageous so he said he would be supporting the request.
Motion made by Williams to approve 511 Adams Avenue, a variance from Section 17.12.040
of the Louisville Municipal Code (LMC) to allow construction of an addition resulting in a lot
coverage of 23%. Motion was seconded by Meseck. Roll call vote.
