Youth Advisory Board
Agenda
10/6/16
and in particular, liaisons stressed that no more than two board members may discuss
YAB business in an open, unpublished setting, including via email.
VIII. Discuss Chair, Vice -Chair and Secretary Officer positions for November
election - Jessica described the roles of Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary, and noted
that members may run for these roles at the next meeting. We talked about potentially
changing the timing election process next year in order to save time, and all members
agreed to the change. In the future, we will reach out to returning members in August or
September to see who is interested in running for office. Positions will be selected via
an anonymous, online vote.
IX. Volunteer projects for the upcoming year - Mandy handed out volunteer logs
and shared the types of volunteer activities that YAB members do through the course of
a typical year. Returning members talked about their favorite activities. We
brainstormed possible activities for some of the undecided months. Ideas included
working at the Boulder Homeless Shelter, or Crayons to Calculators.
X. Teambuilding – Board members played a teambuilding game called Knot or Not.
XI. Goals for the upcoming year – We discussed the fact that several of our yearly
projects have not been as successful as we hoped they'd be, and we threw out the idea
of choosing a yearly focus instead, and doing several smaller projects in keeping with
the year's theme. We brainstormed for a bit, and eventually decided on a theme called
"Love Louisville." The goal is to encourage people of all ages to give back to the
community by volunteering, by supporting local businesses and events, and by
performing random acts of kindness. We will encourage community members to report
to YAB and let us know the kind things they've seen others do or that others have done
for them, and then we will make a display of some kind to share. Some other ideas
included adopting a section of road, setting up a canned food drive, and creating a
resource listing volunteer opportunities.
We also discussed working harder to learn from other boards and commissions
this year. Rather than going to other meetings, we decided to reach out and see if other
board members would come to our meetings to talk to us. Everyone agreed this was a
good idea, so we brainstormed ideas for possible questions to ask and came up with
these:
1. What's the best/most rewarding part about being on your board?
2. What's been the biggest challenge?
3. What has surprised you?
4. What are some of your group's upcoming projects?
5. Can we help your board in any way?
6. Are there any opportunities for others/other youth to volunteer to assist your
board?
XII. Discussion Items for Next Meeting —
• Returning members—take down your Walk the City signs.
• Use Sign Up Genius to sign up to bring meeting snacks
