OEM 0A140
P70 //I
In 1917, Mary Weaver sold all six lots to Dr. Clay E. Giffin (1882-1923). He was a physician in
Boulder.
On October 31, 1927, the Longmont Daily Times published a public notice of sale by Boulder
County of properties itemized on a delinquent tax list. The list indicated that Dr. Giffin's estate
owed $7.94 in delinquent taxes on Lots 1-6, which were listed as having a valuation of$180.
Dirkes Family Ownership, 1939-1956; Date of Construction
In 1939, Edward Dirkes purchased Lots 1-6 of Block 2 from the Boulder County Treasurer. In
1944, Edward transferred ownership to himself and his wife, Martha.
The 1948 Boulder County Assessor card for 901 Parkview gave 1939 as the date of construction,
as does the Boulder County Assessor website today. Boulder County has at times been found to
have been in error with respect to the dates of construction of Louisville properties, so other
evidence is looked to. In this situation, the 1939 date is believed to be correct. There was no
evidence found that would indicate the presence of a house at 901 Parkview earlier than 1939.
In addition, it makes sense that the Dirkes family, upon purchasing the lots, would have then
soon thereafter constructed the house in which they were known to have lived.
Edward Dirkes (1904-1989) was born in British Columbia, Canada. His parents were from
Germany and Scotland. Martha Hernu (1906-1.999) was born in Illinois. Her parents were from
France and Belgium. Both relocated to Louisville with their respective families, and after each
losing a parent, before 1920. Martha's father worked as a miner in Louisville, as did Edward's
stepfather.
Edward Dirkes and Martha Hernu married in 1927. Edward and Martha's children were Helen
(1929-2001) and Edward Jr. (1930-2004). Edward worked as a miner. The following photo from
a public family tree on Ancestry.com shows Edward and Martha Dirkes:
2
