City Council
Study Session Summary
September 9, 2008
Page 4 of6

Kathy Kron, Project Manager introduced Traci Jones of Studio No.6. Ms. Jones
expressed her appreciation for being allowed to make the gateway signage
design. Ms. Jones said that when she met with the committee they had indicated
that they wanted a Gateway Sign that included a historical element that was
timeless, reflected a progressive small town and an upscale community. Ms.
Jones said that she incorporated the mining and train history of Louisville into the
design. Ms. Jones presented the design family explaining that there were 8
entries identified by the committee and that each had specific needs regarding
size. Ms. Jones said that an interactive component came from the lighting which
was a state-of-the-art lighting system that could be programmed to dim, change
color, etc.

Mayor Sisk said that he was impressed by the design but wanted to know if solar
powered lighting had been discussed. Ms. Jones said that it had not but that it
would be something to look at.

Councilor Ron Sackett asked about the size of the lettering of Louisville. He was
concerned that it would not be legible. Ms. Jones said that there is a
mathematical formula used to determine legibility of print in signs and that
depending on the location of the sign the lettering may be different, but it is
definitely a priority when designing the signs.

Councilor Sackett said that he has noticed that some of the current city signs are
partially covered by plants that were planted around them and hoped that when
the landscaping was installed this would be taken into consideration so as not to
have them cover the sign as they mature. Parks and Recreation Director Joe
Stevens said that it would be along with sight restrictions and other regulations.

Councilor Muckle asked where the picture of train had come from. Ms. Jones
said that she researched for pictures of trains during that period. Councilor
Muckle thought it might be worthwhile to see if the Museum had any pictures of
trains that were unique to Louisville.

Councilor Frost Yarnell said that she found the 'welcome home' odd and wasn't
sure how it would be received. Ms. Jones said that when she asked people
around town what they thought of the design most people indicated that they
really liked the 'welcome home'. City Manager Fleming said when he saw it he
liked it.

City Manager Fleming wanted to make Council aware that the cost was
significantly more than what was budgeted. Ms. Jones explained that signs on
the scale that was being considered can be very expensive and that the ballpark
cost is mid-range.

Mayor Sisk stated he thought the design was unique compared to other city
gateway signs he as seen.
