LCity;
Louisville
PARKS & RECREATION
Memorandum
To: Joliette Woodson, Public Works Engineering
From: Allan Gill, PLA, and Park's Project Manager
Date: March, 2018
Re: SH 42 Underpass, 60% Plan Review
Attached for your reference are the landscape and architectural sheets from the 60% submittal dated
February 21, 2018 which includes three options for plant material and three architectural elevation
options.
Plant Material:
Option 'A' includes native seeding over most of the area with accent native seeding adjacent to
sandstone slab's set on edge with crushed stone mulch as a focal piece.
Option B' includes native seeding over most of the area and includes trees and shrubs in a planting
bed as a focal point.
Pro's & Con's Plant Material:
Plant Material Option 'A'
Pro's, low maintenance and less water consumption.
Con's, without plant material the underpass does not resemble the underpasses at McCaslin
Avenue and South Street which both have plantings and share stronger design. The
underpasses on Cherry Street near the golf course and South Boulder Road west of
Washington Avenue do not have plant material.
Plant Material Option B'
Pro's, adding trees and shrubs strengthens the landscape character and more closely
resembles the underpasses at McCaslin Avenue and South Street providing consistency with
regard to design.
Con's, more maintenance and more water consumption.
Pro's & Con's, Architectural Elevations:
Pro's & Con's with regard to the architectural elevations are subjective. Elevations 'A' and `A.1',
have a stronger vertical presence resembling the recently completed South Street Underpass
while elevation `A.2', is more subtle and resembles the underpass near the intersection of
McCaslin Boulevard and Washington Avenue.
With the expected high use by the public, Park and Recreation Department staff are suggesting a
hybrid approach to plant material which includes native grass, trees and `randomly' placed boulders
and omits the planting area, shrubs and sandstone placed on edge. This option keeps maintenance
