City,- OmLouisville
Communications Plan
Updated 5/22/18
Introduction
The City of Louisville values public involvement in the decision -making process. It is important
to maintain the flow of communication between the City and citizens so that elected officials and
staff can make informed decisions that reflect the opinions of the community. The City aims to
engage residents and business owners and encourage them to effectively become a part of the
process. The purpose of the Communications Plan is to assess current outreach efforts and
identify methods to improve communication with target audiences.
Goals
• Provide citizens with complete, accurate, and timely information, enabling them to
participate in the City's decision -making process.
• Encourage two-way informational flow that acknowledges the value of citizen input.
• Develop proactive communication in which the City has the opportunity to relay
information rather than relying on others to interpret the City's actions.
• Establish strong and consistent messages that reinforce and reflect the City's goals as
established by the City Council and staff.
• Utilize a variety of means to communicate with the maximum number of individuals in
the community.
• Maximize awareness, utilization, and attendance for City programs and events.
• Establish and maintain proactive media relations to keep the community connected.
• Explore innovative methods of communication that incorporate new technology.
• Ensure that materials include a diverse representation of the community.
• Periodically review the Communications Plan to ensure it is up-to-date.
Target Audiences
• Citizens of Louisville — Establishing a dialogue with residents, employees and business
owners is the highest priority for the City.
• City Council and Boards, Commissions, and Committee Members — Council, Board,
Commission, and Committee Members communicate on behalf of the community and
the organization.
• City Employees — The City's employees play an important role communicating with the
public.
• Volunteers — The City relies on many people who volunteer their time to the community.
It is important to develop ongoing communication with volunteers to maintain these
relationships.
• Visitors — Louisville serves as a unique destination for visitors. Communicating with
visitors is a key component of tourism for the City.
10
