Elliott Family Ownership, 1939-1962; Discussion of Date of Construction
In 1939, Walter Elliott (1893-1958) purchased this parcel from Pater Murphy. In 1945, he
conveyed ownership to his wife, Helen Barnitz Elliott (1893-1980). Walter had served in World
War I and they married in 1922. The following photo from a public family tree on Ancestry.com
shows Walter and Helen Elliott in the yard of their home at 330 County Rd. in the early 1940s:
Walter and Helen Elliott raised their three children in the house at 330 County Rd. The children,
Ruth, Roy, and Frank, attended Louisville High School. They graduated in, respectively, 1942,
1949, and 1952.
According to members of the Elliott family, their house at 330 County Rd. was moved twice
before being moved to County Rd. in Louisville. The structure was located near the Ralston Dam
and Reservoir in the 1930s. This was a federal works project in Jefferson County during the
Depression. According to online sources, the dam was constructed in 1935-37 by the Denver
Board of Water Commissioners. The dam impounds Ralston Creek to create the Ralston
Reservoir, which supplies water to the city of Denver. According to his children, Walter Elliott
served lunches from the structure to Works Progress Administration workers who were
working on the construction. They said that the structure was then moved to Marshall, then to
Louisville.
Walter and Helen Elliott used the property to make their family living in addition to living in the
house. Walter Elliott started a service station next to the house. County Road was then the
main road to Denver, making it a good location for a service station. Records indicate that it
2
