Centennial Mine in 1942.) Benny Phillips died in California in 1962 and was buried in the
Lafayette, Colorado Cemetery.
In 1935, Frank Giles conveyed the property at 417 County Rd. to his grandson, Benny Phillips.
The Fotis family lived at 417 County Rd. until 1936, when they moved to a house on Lincoln
Ave. in Louisville. Census records from 1940 indicate that the house at 417 County Rd. was a
rental at that time, and the renters appear to have been Wilfred and Naomi Smith, ages 24 and
22. Wilfred Smith had grown up in Louisville as the son of Charles and Avis Smith, and Wilfred
worked as a construction laborer in 1940. Louisville directories show that they lived at 417 County
Rd. and that Joe Cisneros worked at the Eagle Mine.
The best evidence of what the house at 417 County Rd. looked like when it had a partial second
story is this 1948 County Assessor photo of 421 County, the next house to the north, that was
taken in 1948 and that shows 417 County on the left (it has been cropped to highlight 417
County Rd.):
The following photo is from the County Assessor card for 417 County Rd. The card was originally
filled out in 1948. However, handwritten notes in red pencil by the County Assessor's office
staff on the card states that the photo on the card is a "retake" and "Took 1/2 story off now 1."
The photo is not dated, but there is an indication that the red pencil markings on the card were
made in 1950.
