GROUND PLAN SKETCH
11.401 R Ruti[[R [TORIL[t
FRONT
A handwritten notation made on the card in 1956 states: "12-10-56 — permit for
installing Bath — but no one living here / windows boarded up."
Alden Ownership, 1956-1964
In 1956, Leo and Louise Deborski sold 317 Roosevelt to Charles Alden (1875-1961), who
was a widower, and his sister, Clara Alden (1873-1963). Charles Alden lived in the house.
He was a retired minister, and according to his 1961 obituary, he was born in Bangor,
Mich. and "received an AB degree from the University of Nebraska and a masters
degree from the University of Colorado in 1934. At one time, Alden was professor of
Greek and Latin at Cotner College, Lincoln, Neb., and for several years professor of Latin
and literature at Fort Lewis College. He moved to Montezuma College in New Mexico in
1935 as professor of English, remaining there for a few years.... While living in
Boulder, which he did for many years, he built several houses in the area." After his
death, Clara, of San Diego, became the sole owner. (A handwritten notation dated 1962
on the County Assessor card states that it was boarded up at that time.) After she died
in 1963, her heirs, Henry Nance and Violet Nance, sold 317 Roosevelt in 1964.
This photo shows an aerial view (facing east) of the house in 1962:
4
