Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
July 2013
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 187R
1100 Lincoln Ave. History
Legal Description: Lot 22 LESS N % & ALL LOTS 23-24, BLOCK 6, CAPITOL HILL ADDITION
Year of Construction: circa 1905
Summary: Members of the Martella family of Louisville owned and lived in this house
for over 80 years.
History of the Capitol Hill Addition; Construction Date
J.C. Williams, who was a mine superintendent with the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company,
and Irving Elberson, who was a banker, were the developers of the Capitol Hill Addition.
The plat for this addition was filed with the County in 1904.
The County gives the year 1900 as the date of construction for this house. However, the
County is sometimes in error with respect to the dates of construction of Louisville
buildings, so other evidence is looked to. In this case, the County Assessor card
completed for 1100 Lincoln in 1948 does not indicate a date of construction, as the
cards usually do, and it is the date given on the card (whether accurate or not) that most
typically has formed the basis of the estimated date of construction currently given by
the County. Also relevant is the fact that the subdivision wasn't platted until 1904. The
indication in the property records that this parcel wasn't sold by the developer to a
purchaser until 1906 might suggest that the house had not yet been built, but the
possibility that the developer built the house or that the first owner built it before the
deed was recorded cannot be ruled out. The house does appear in the correct location
on the 1909 Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville, so it was standing by 1909. For these
reasons, the estimated year of construction is "circa 1905."
Williams Ownership, 1906-1911
Online County property records show that D.R. Williams purchased this property in 1906
from one of the developers, Irving Elberson. The property at that time included the land
at 1108 Lincoln, next door to the north.
