"D.R. Williams" is believed to refer to Daniel R. Williams, who was listed in the 1906-07
Louisville directory as having been a miner. He and his wife, Laura, and their children
came to Louisville from Ohio in 1906. They are remembered for having operated the
Commercial Hotel on Pine Street between Main and La Farge for many years, starting in
about 1910. A record showing that the Williams family lived at 1100 Lincoln could not be
located.
Riordan Ownership, 1911-1930
In 1911, John Riordan purchased the house at 1100 Lincoln along with the parcel to the
north that is now 1108 Lincoln.
John Riordan was born in 1857, while his wife, Ida, was born in 1867. They had come to
Louisville from Logan County, Colorado. The 1916 Louisville directory lists them as living
in this location, which at that time had the address of 605 Lincoln (the address system
changed in the 1930s). John Riordan was listed as being a farmer. The 1918 directory
shows that living with them at 1100 Lincoln at that time were at least three of their
many children: Edward, Daniel, and Alice. Daniel Riordan was at the time serving in
World War I. At least one other of their children (Margaret Riordan Sirokman) was living
nearby.
John Riordan died in 1929. Ida Riordan sold the property to Liberato S. Martella in 1930.
Martella Family Ownership, 1930-2012
Liberato Martella purchased this property, and what is now the property at 1108
Lincoln, in 1930. The house at 1100 Lincoln then became the home of the Martella
family for the next several decades.
Liberato Martella was born in Italy in 1882. Records indicate that he was born in
Alvignano, Caserta, Italy. He immigrated to the U.S. with his mother in about 1886 and
they met up with his father, who had already come to the Pittsburgh area. Eventually,
Liberato came to Marshall, Colorado and worked in the coal mines there. When he was
24, he returned to Italy and married Colomba Scasserra there in 1907. She had been
born in Roccamandolfi, Isernia, Italy in 1907. They settled in Marshall. According to a
Martella family history, Liberato Martella changed his name to Albert Martella (though
legal property documents still showed his name as Liberato).
Liberato and Colomba Martella had ten children, eight of whom (seven boys and one
girl) lived to adulthood: Vincent (1912-1995), Anthony (1913-1975), Albert Jr. (1917-
2003), Edward (1919-2001), Clarence (1920-2006), Marguirete "Marge" (1922-2011),
Thomas (1925-living), and William (1928-living). At the time that the Martellas moved
into the house in 1930, the children would have ranged in age from about 2 to 18 years.
