Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
June 2017
If city
Louisville
COLORADO * SINCE 187E
724 Johnson History
Legal Description: Lots 10-11 and the western 20 feet of Lot 12, plus a 20 foot strip abutting the
south side of the property (vacated alley), Block 4, Johnson's First Addition, Louisville, Colorado
Year of Construction: 1939
Summary: Alva and Murel Pierce constructed 724 Johnson in 1939. The original parcel that the
Pierces purchased in 1939 consisted of additional property to the east and west of the current
parcel. These lots have been sold off over the years.
Development of the Johnson's First Addition
Johnson's 1st Addition was platted in 1890 by Mahlon V. Johnson. It was only the second
residential subdivision to be platted, after the Jefferson Place Addition was platted in 1880. (It
consists of two separate sections that do not border one another, though both abut Roosevelt.)
Mahlon V. Johnson was a Denver -based coal mine operator who started the Ajax Coal Mining
Co. in 1889 and served as its president. According to 1889 articles in Denver newspapers, the
original intent was to establish a new town by Louisville to be called "Ajaxville" with proximity
to the new Ajax Mine. However, instead, Johnson platted this subdivision that became part of
the town of Louisville.
Pierce Family Ownership of 724 Johnson, 1939-1947; Discussion of Date of Construction
Rocky Mountain Fuel Company came to own some of the lots in the Johnson's First Subdivision.
The reason for and the date of the company's acquisition of the lots are not known.
In 1939, Alva Pierce (1887-death date unknown) and Murel [sic] Sandy Triplett Pierce (1892-
1994) purchased Lots 9 through 14 from the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company. They had married
in 1930.
According to the County Assessor Card for this property and the County website, 724 Johnson
was constructed in 1939. Boulder County has sometimes been found to be in error with respect
1
