property. The first evidence of the house having been constructed is the photo below showing
the house in circa 1926. For this reason, the date of construction is believed to be "circa 1914-
1926."
Jannucci Family Ownership, 1918-1959 (41 years)
Marie Schreiter Montgomery entered into an option agreement in 1914 to sell the lots to
Ernesto Jannucci (sometimes spelled as Janucci, lanucci, or lannucci). The contract appears to
indicate that there was not yet a house on the property. Ernest Jannucci had to make minimum
monthly payments and had 5 years in which to purchase the property. He became the actual
owner in 1918. Ernesto (1877-1934) and his three siblings had come from Fanana, Modena,
Italy to Louisville in the early 1900s. He and his older sister, Cleonice (1871-1957), would end up
living in this house. Their brother, Joseph (1872-1957), and his wife, Philomena (1883-1976),
lived across the street at 1116 La Farge. Ernesto and Cleonice also lived at 1116 La Farge for
many years before they lived at 1125 La Farge, as shown in directories and census records.
Ernesto was a coal miner and it appears that his sister, Cleonice, kept house for him. Neither of
them are believed to have married or had children. Another Jannucci sibling, Genoveffa Tavoni
(1875-1961) also lived nearby at 1233 La Farge. So there were four siblings in all who all lived
within a two -block area of La Farge.
The following photo shows 1125 La Farge on the left. It shows Lois Zarini, who was born in 1923
and appears to be about three years old, and her mother, Mary, in front of their house at 1109
La Farge. Due to Lois's age in the photo, the date of the photo is believed to be about 1926.
2
