Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
May 2012
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
705 McKinley Ave. History
Legal Description: Lots 6, 7 and 8, Block 9, Louisville Heights
Year of Construction: 1949
Summary: This house was built by the Steinbaugh family in 1949. It was later owned by
members of the Deborski family for 52 years.
Development of the Louisville Heights Subdivision; Date of Construction
The Louisville Heights Addition in which this house sits was first developed in 1904 by
the Colorado Mortgage and Investment Co. Ltd.
James and Augusta Wintle purchased the lots along this block of McKinley in 1905,
according to Boulder County records. These included at least what are now 701
McKinley, 705 McKinley, 733 McKinley, and 741 McKinley. James and Augusta lived at
741 McKinley. Following the death of James Wintle, Augusta Wintle then sold the lots to
Royal Thompson, by a deed recorded in 1924. In 1932, Royal Thompson sold off the lots
at the south end of the block to J.J. Steinbaugh. J.J. Steinbaugh built a house at 701
McKinley (the corner of Pine and McKinley).
J.J. Steinbaugh (1868-1950) was the founder of the Steinbaugh business in Louisville,
which began as a blacksmith business on Front Street in 1892 and evolved into a
hardware and lumber business that lasted until the 1990s. The Steinbaugh family was
also in the house construction business.
The Boulder County Assessor card for this property gives 1949 as the year of
construction. Records show that this date is correct. A County Assessor card for this
house, dated 1950, states that the house was one year old at the time.
Steinbaugh Family Ownership, 1932-1960
