Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
March 2012
La
Cityof
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
821 McKinley Ave., Louisville
Summary: This property was historically the residence of English, French, and Irish families who settled
in Louisville.
Ashburn Ownership, 1907-1913
The Louisville Heights Addition in which this house sits was first developed in 1904 by the Colorado
Mortgage and Investment Co. Ltd. A number of lots were conveyed to Charles F. Wolfer, Nellie Affolter
(as the wife and heir of John Affolter, who had been Wolfer's business partner), John Barnd, and James
Miller.
Online Boulder County property records show that Margaret Ashburn purchased these lots from one of
the developers, Charles Wolfer, by a deed recorded in 1907.
The 1948 Boulder County Assessor card for this property states that the house was constructed in 1907.
This would appear to be correct, based on the fact that it was initially purchased by the Ashburns in
1907. The house is also shown in the correct location on the 1909 Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville.
Robert Ashburn (1875-1961) and Margaret Liddle Ashburn (1881-1947) were among Louisville's settlers
who came from England's coal mining areas. The 1901 English census shows them living with their baby
daughter, Hilda, in Hirst, Northumberland in northern England. Robert was a coal miner. Later census
records indicate that they came to the US later in that same year of 1901. They had two more children in
Colorado, Gladys and Robert, Jr. The 1904 directory for Louisville shows that they lived on Main Street
before purchasing 821 McKinley.
1
