Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
December 2016
If city
Louisville
COLORADO * SINCE 187E
1436 Cannon St. History
Legal Description: Lot 8, Block 7, Caledonia Place
Year of Construction: circa 1903-1908
Summary: Italian families owned this small home in the Little Italy neighborhood for about 40
years. In 1948, it became the home of a family of Hispanic heritage that had relatives living next
door, showing the evolution of the Little Italy neighborhood from residents being
predominantly Italian to there also being other ethnic groups represented in the neighborhood.
Development of Caledonia Place
The subdivision in which 1436 Cannon is located is Caledonia Place. It was platted and recorded
with Boulder County in 1890 by James Cannon, Jr., Howard Morris, and Henry Brooks. It was
the fourth addition to original Louisville, which had been platted in 1878.
Little Italy Neighborhood; Ownership by Zarlengo and Piscitella Families (1903-1907)
In 1893, Peter James (a name that was Americanized from "Di Giacomo") bought all twelve lots
of Block 7 of the Caledonia Place Addition from the United Coal Company, the company of
Caledonia Place founder James Cannon. Peter James sold off different lots to buyers.
The neighborhood in which this house is located is known as Little Italy. The particularly high
concentration of Italians in Little Italy, historically, and the separation of this enclave from the
rest of the town due to the railroad tracks led to the formation of a close neighborhood and to
cultural practices that endured for decades. The high concentration of Italians in this
neighborhood eventually changed to a mixture of Italian and Hispanic families as well as those
with other backgrounds.
1
