Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
June 2013
IECity of
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
1004 Griffith Street History
Legal Description: "E 65 FT OUTLOT IN LOT 1 BLK B INDUSTRIAL AREA & 10 FT STRIP OF LOT 1
ADJACENT TO OUTLOT ON EAST AKA E 65 FT OF LOTS 7 & 8 & W HALF VAC ALLEY BLK 11
CALEDONIA PLACE"; previously described as part of Lots 7 & 8, Block 11, Caledonia Place.
Year of Construction: circa 1900
The history of 1004 Griffith is intertwined with that of 1000 Griffith. Research of the County's
online property records indicates that the two properties had common ownership until 1972.
They also used to have the same general legal descriptions, both being Part of Lots 7 and 8,
Block 11, Caledonia Place.
According to the Boulder County Assessor, the house at 1004 Griffith was built in 1900.
However, as the County is sometimes in error with respect to the dates of construction of
Louisville buildings, an attempt was made to verify the construction date. Information has been
located that shows that 1004 Griffith was a relocated house that was added to the yard of 1000
Griffith in 1972. It is very possible that the house originally dates to circa 1900. However, as was
the case for most of the relocated buildings in the Louisville area, there are no known records
that would indicate where these buildings were originally located. Thus, the history of where
this house came from is not known. Also, unfortunately, no County Assessor card, from 1948 or
any other year, could be located for this property.
Information about the ownership of the properties at 1000 Griffith and 1004 Griffith before
1940 could not be located through the County's online records, as they appear to have been
acquired by the Boulder County Treasurer in a bankruptcy proceeding. In 1940, Dora Golden of
Louisville purchased them as one parcel, it is believed, from the Boulder County Treasurer.
In 1949, Golden sold the parcel to John and Cecelia Sarson. Members of the Sarson family
owned the parcel that had the address of 1000 Griffith for fifteen years, from 1949 to 1964.
The Louisville directories for 1951 and 1955 show that John and Cecelia Sarson lived at 1000
Griffith and state that John Sarson worked as a miner. They were members of Louisville's
