"Raestas" and in Louisville directories as "Rastus.") Records show that he came to the
United States in the early 1900s. He left behind in Hungary a wife who, for reasons not
known, never joined him in the U.S. By 1910, Restas was living in Gunn, Wyoming,
where he worked as a coal miner. Sheridan, Wyoming, was then his place of residence
until the 1930s. He came to Louisville in about 1935 (at a time during the Depression
when Louisville's mining industry still had some available jobs) and continued to work as
a coal miner. A 1942 professional photo of the miners at the Centennial Mine includes
the image of Restas. The 1949 directory for Louisville indicates that he was working at
the Monarch Mine at that time.
The Boulder County Assessor card for this property, filled out in 1948, shows that the
house at 1131 Spruce was built in 1942. The Louisville directory for 1943 confirms that
Restas was living there by that time.
This neighborhood of Louisville was home to at least four natives of Eastern Europe. In
addition to Steve Evanoff, who was born in Bulgaria, and Joe Restas, who was born in
Hungary, there were the following two people who were born in Bulgaria: Alex Vasiloff,
who lived at 1117 Spruce following the Evanoffs, and George Malchoff, who also lived
on Spruce Street in East Louisville with his family.
The following images are from the 1948 County Assessor card for this property, at the
time of the ownership and residency by Joe Restas, and show the house in 1948
followed by the ground layout. The County Assessor card shows that the original living
area was only 266 square feet. This living area consisted of two rooms, a kitchen and a
bedroom. The markings in red pencil indicate the bathroom and closet that were added
in the early 1950s, bringing the square footage to 350.
