"Installations — Repairing — Cleaning — Tool Grinding — Saw Filing" and "Lawnmower
Sharpening and Welding."
A 1952 program of the St. Louis Annual Bazaar advertised "Sheet Metal Work by Joe's
Metal Shop." Local residents recall that other work done at the metal shop included the
construction of swing sets. The shop was still called "Joe's" into at least the 1960s. It is
believed that Dom Tomeo operated the shop into the 1970s.
Dominic Tomeo, who had been born in 1907, died in 1983. The City of Louisville
purchased the buildings at 1001, 1005, and 1013 Main for a historical museum. It is
believed that it was due to the metal shop not having usefulness as a museum building
that the City of Louisville decided to move the structure to its facilities on Empire Rd.
This move took place in 1983, and the building has been used by the City since that
time. At this time, the foundation of Joe's Metal shop separates the Jacoe Store and the
Tomeo House on the Historical Museum's campus, which today has the single address
of 1001 Main Street.
Sources
The preceding research is based on a review of relevant and available online County property records,
census records, oral history interviews, and related resources, and Louisville directories, newspaper
articles, maps, files, obituary records, survey records, and historical photographs from the collection of
the Louisville Historical Museum.
