Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
December 15, 2008
2. The relationship of the building as a potential contributing structure to
a potential historical district;
3. The reasonable condition of the building; and
4. The reasonable projected cost of restoration or repair.
She stated that #1 was clearly met as the building is eligible for landmarking for its social
significance. The criteria for #2 is also likely met. As to #3 and #4, the building is in good
enough condition to save, restore, or move.
Lewis recommended a stay be placed on the demolition request and asked that the
Commission work with the applicant to find a new use or home for the building.
Members were in agreement that the building is a great candidate for landmarking either
in its current location or if moved to another one.
Muckle made a motion to place a stay on the demolition request as the building is
eligible for local landmarking (individually or in a district).
Tofte seconded the motion.
Roll call vote:
Tofte Yes McMenamin Yes
Whiteman Yes Lewis Yes
Muckle Yes Koertje Yes
Lewis offered to be the HPC liaison with the applicant to work with him on possible
alternatives to demolition.
Lewis thanked the applicant for his time and willingness to work with the HPC. She
noted it will take a real effort to find a location for the building. She asked Muth if the City
would be interested in the building.
Muth said she would see if that was a possibility.
Lewis asked if there were any estimates for moving costs
Muth stated she would try to find some
Discussion -Gateway Signs
Muth reported that at the November 17 HPC meeting Jean Morgan asked the HPC to
comment on the City's design for gateway signs. As it was not on the agenda for the
meeting, Vice-chair Muckle asked that this be placed on the December 15 HPC agenda
for discussion.
Muth noted that the sign plan would include installation of signs at the seven gateways
to town. The costs of the signs are estimated to be $75,000 - $130,000 each depending
on which sign is used, the type of lighting, and the cost of engineering. Given the high
cost, there are no plans for installation at this time. If money is available in the 2010
