George Codron was born in Les Mines, Allier, Auvergne, France and came to the U.S. in about
1906. Maria Zoe Brassart was born in France and came to the U.S. in about 1909.
Their children, both born in Illinois, were George, Jr. (1917-1988) and Zoe (1928-2012). The
Codron family came to Louisville in about 1936 from a coal mining area of Illinois. They were
among several French families who came to Louisville from Illinois at the height of the
Depression when coal mines in Illinois were reportedly closing for economic reasons. Louisville
mines produced coal that was mostly used locally for heating purposes, and the mines for the
most part continued operations during the Depression. 829 Rex became the home of the
Codron family.
(Records indicate that in 1941, George Codron, Jr. and his wife, Agnes had bought what is now
320 Roosevelt from Anna Jacques. This parcel that had been the side yard of 829 Rex was then
transferred to Maria and George Codron, Sr. and they owned it form 1950 to 1964, with it again
being the side yard of their home at 829 Rex.)
The following photo and ground layout image are from the 1948 County Assessor card for 829
Rex:
3
