Bridget Bacon
Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
October 2018
LCityof
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
1028 Rex St., Louisville, Colorado
Legal Description: Lots 5-9, Block 9, Murphy Place Subdivision
Year of Construction: 1909
Summary: This house is located on the southeast corner of the neighborhood of Frenchtown in
Louisville. As was the case for almost every house in Frenchtown, it had a French owner.
However, this home was also owned by one of Louisville's early Hispanic families and, for nearly
100 years, the Italian Caranci family of Louisville.
History of Murphy Place Subdivision
Peter F. Murphy platted the subdivision of Murphy Place in 1907. He did so as President of the
Louisville Realty & Securities Company.
Warembourg Ownership, 1907-1920; Date of Construction
August Warembourg, Jr. (1875-1930) purchased this parcel with its five lots from the Louisville
Realty & Securities Company in 1907.
August Warembourg was born in France and immigrated in the 1880s, as did his parents and
siblings. August's wife, Fannie LeComte (1882-1967), was also born in France and immigrated in
the 1880s with her family. August Warembourg worked as a coal miner.
The 1910 federal census shows that August and Fannie were living in a house in this location at
that time. In 1910, the family consisted of August and Fannie Warembourg, plus their children
Fanny, Emilene, and Arthur. It is believed that during their residence in the house, two more
children joined the family: Walter and Olga.
In terms of the date of construction of the house, Boulder County gives two different dates. The
1948 Boulder County Assessor Card for 1028 Rex states that the house was constructed in
1909. However, the current Boulder County website gives the date of 1920. Boulder County has
sometimes been found to be in error with respect to the dates of construction of historic
1
