Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
March 19, 2008

Public Hearing - Landmark Application, 1116 Lafarge Avenue
Application No. 2008-001-LA
Muckle asked members of the HPC if there were any disclosures prior to the start of the
public hearing. Koertje , Tofte, and Muckle reported having been it the home for social
occasions.

Vice-Chair Muckle opened the public hearing and asked for the staff presentation.

Muth reported that this is an application to landmark 1116 LaFarge Avenue, historically
known as the Jannucci House. The house was built in 1908 as a single family residence.
It has served as the home for only two families since its construction. The home was
originally owned by Joseph and Philomena Jannucci who emigrated from Italy. Members
of the Jannucci family lived in the home until 1977 when it was sold to the current
owners John Leary and Jan Rowen.

Like most other residents at the time, Joseph Jannucci was a coal miner. The Jannuccis
also had a “macaroni factory” in the basement of the home. The factory consisted of cast
iron machinery which mixed the dough and rolled it into pasta. A drive shaft, attached to
the machinery, extended through the upper basement wall into the backyard where it
engaged a gear system which was turned in a circle by a horse attached to it.

The house was built in 1908. This hipped roof, brick home has had few alterations over
the years and retains a high degree of architectural integrity. There have been no other
additions in the past 50 years; any alterations have not unduly compromised the
building’s historic character.

The building is currently the home of the applicants John Leary and Jan Rowen.

Staff as determined that this site meets the criteria set forth in the Preservation
Ordinance in three ways:

Architectural Significance – The site exemplifies specific elements of an
architectural style or period. This site is one of a handful of brick homes built in
the early 1900s. Its architectural integrity is very strong as it has had little
changes over the years.

Social Significance - (2) Exemplifies cultural, political, economic or social
heritage of the community. The site is historically significant for its association
with Louisville’s early settlement by Italian immigrants and for the commercial
use of the site as a “macaroni factory.”

In relation to the above, the site has all of the following characteristics:
a. Shows character, interest or value as part of the development, heritage
or cultural characteristics of the community, region, state, or nation.
b. Retains original design features, materials and/or character.
c. Remains in its original location, has the same historic context after
having been moved, or was moved more than fifty (50) years ago.

In addition, section 15.36.050 Criteria for Designation states that any site listed on
the State or National Register of Historic Places shall be presumed to qualify for
local designation under this Chapter. The site was listed on the National Register
