Planning Commission
Meeting Minutes
February 11, 2016
historic. These towers are on private property. If these signs are going to be put Downtown by
the Marketplace, change the patios. Right now, we will have the patios for at least 10-15 years
so the patios need to be in the photo background. It will be important for visualization for CC. I'd
also like to see cost estimates.
McCartney says in looking at the light standard on top, it will match the underpass. Tying in the
design of the overall city is important because you need to know you've come into someplace
and you need to know when you've left. We don't see that here. We need to have the clear
gateways welcoming you in and that it is easy to get around.
Pritchard says with family 2, we might not have to tear out a new sign out on Highway 42
because there are similarities in elements with the circular motion. We may not have to replace
every sign and then can be more cost sensitive.
McCartney says this will be part of the Staff report. This will come back to you but when we
carry it forward to CC, we will make sure they have your comments on how you address these.
The design family that came forward is the preferred family from the public being presented.
The PC comments are just as valid as the public. When we carry this forward to CC, we will
make sure the medallions from family 2 are carried forward.
Tengler asks how did Staff decide on five neighborhoods?
McCartney says it was Staff's decision. When I think of the City, those are the five areas that
we primarily hear about. The reason we chose Monarch is primarily because of residential
homes and the golf course, but also the hospital and the school district. We could have called it
Avista or Coal Creek, but we didn't do that because the trail system has Coal Creek. We didn't
want to step over the symbology created from others.
Pritchard says Monarch is tied to this community but it should be tied closer to the schools
which are the focal point of that neighborhood.
Hsu says I don't like family 2 because it looks like Disney World, but Chairman Pritchard brings
up a good point. It is clear that all of these are Louisville. In looking at the final five, only one of
them says Louisville. It is important to point out that the Colorado Tech Center is Louisville.
These places are Louisville. It is not clear to someone who needs these signs. Also, the
Downtown symbol has the word separated into Down and Town, and it really is one word. When
I was looking for a house here in Louisville a few years ago, and going through the McCaslin
corridor, it is not obvious that there was a Downtown from there. It is nice to have the Main
Street sign pointing to Downtown.
Pritchard asks when can the PC see this again?
Robinson says we can try to add it to the March PC meeting with the comments you've made.
Pritchard says as we look at our calendars for next month, we should look at the possibility of
an overflow meeting. If we are not able to accomplish everything at the March 10 meeting, I
would like to entertain the option of an overflow meeting so we are caught up on both
Wayfinding and Small Area Plan. The normal overflow meeting would be March 24.
Closed Public Hearing and discussion by Commission:
Motion made by Tengler to continue Citywide Wayfinding Signs to March 10, 2016, seconded
by Brauneis. Motion passed by unanimous voice vote.
Planning Commission Comments:
Pritchard says that Staff is losing Sean McCartney on February 26, 2016.
McCartney says I started at the City in June 2006.
Pritchard says we will miss you. You have brought light to what we do here.
McCartney says the PC is the best Commission we have. The thoroughness you put into your
decisions and the support you provide Staff are things that make an employee want to continue
to work for the City and represent it. I am very appreciative of everything the PC has taught me
throughout the years and I hope to carry it forward in the future.
Staff Comments:
