In response to residents voicing concern about a group of coyotes that are sick with mange in the area of Walnut Park, Rangers and staff have been working closely with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to monitor the animals and assess their health. This effort has resulted in a wealth of photographs from two motion -activated cameras and helpful information about how coyotes use Open Space corridors to move through Louisville and conduct their daily activities. CPW district wildlife managers will perform on -site visits this week to determine next management steps for the coyotes. Staff are coordinating with the Police Department to ensure public safety during these visits. Education/Volunteer: Past volunteer events: A. Tuesday, September 15th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, Pulling for Louisville, Hecla Lake Russian Olives. Hecla Lake Open Space (meet at eastern entrance off Lakespur Court). Professional, amateur, and beginner naturalists will convene on Saturday, October 10th from 9:00-10:30 AM at Davidson Mesa for an iNaturalist rally. The event will be a mini-"bioblitz" where participants identify plants and wildlife using the iNaturalist app and share their knowledge with each other. B. Painting enthusiasts will gather at Davidson Mesa on Wednesday, October 21 from 5:00-7:00 PM for our debut informal "plein air" painting event. C. Volunteers will conduct a poop clean-up event at the Davidson Mesa Dog Off -Leash area on Saturday, November 7 from 9:00-10:00 AM. D. Open Space staff will give a live, online presentation "How to Make Your Yard More Wildlife Friendly" on a Tuesday, November 10 at 6:00 PM.
