<br /> <br />Advocacy, information and training to build stronger cities and towns. <br /> <br />Advocacy <br />CML is your voice before the state and federal government, employing a general counsel, staff attorneys and full-time <br />lobbyists to ensure that all municipalities are well represented at the State Capitol. <br /> <br />The League monitors the Colorado Legislature for proposals that would affect municipalities and works to pass, defeat or <br />amend legislation in accordance with general municipal interests and membership direction. The work of state agencies <br />also is under the watchful eye of CML, as are statewide ballot issues. <br /> <br />Respected and honored with many awards, CML is recognized as the leading municipal voice before the General <br />Assembly, Congress and the courts. <br /> <br />CML represents Colorado' municipal interests at the federal level, as well, and is an active member of the National League <br />of Cities. <br /> <br />The League participates. as amicus curiae (friend of the court) in state and federal appellate court cases that involve issues <br />important to municipalities. <br /> <br />Information <br />CML provides the accessible information you need to serve your municipality and its residents. <br /> <br />Each year, staff responds to individual inquiries with information and advice about municipal government as well as sample <br />documents from the League's extensive library. <br /> <br />CML periodicals (the bimonthly magazine, Colorado Municipalities; biweekly CML Newsletter; and Statehouse Report <br />while the General Assembly is in session) and books capture important technical and legal research. <br /> <br />The League also distributes email (Issues Update and CML News) on emerging issues and posts regularly to our Web <br />site, www.cml.org. as well as facilitates information through networking by emaillistservs that allow peers to share <br />information and ideas electronically. <br /> <br />Training <br />CML offers dynamic events and workshops to support your continuing education and training. The sessions and meetings <br />attract about 1,000 participants from throughout Colorado every year. <br /> <br />League workshops are affordable, capacity-building sessions that promote better understanding of municipal government <br />and provide tools for effective leadership. Topics are timely and relevant. Examples include leadership, meeting facilitation, <br />communication and parliamentary procedure. <br /> <br />Each June, the CML Annual Conference is the premier meeting for municipal officials in Colorado; municipal officials from <br />throughout the state attend the three-day series of seminars. The Seminar on Municipal Law is held each fall, while each <br />February brings officials from cities and towns across the state to meet in Denver for the Legislative Workshop and an <br />audience with state lawmakers. <br /> <br />The League also hosts informative meetings across the state each spring and fall. <br /> <br />Stronger cities and towns <br />CML is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that has served and represented Colorado's cities and towns since 1923. <br />The League offers membership to any incorporated city or town in Colorado, and currently serves more than 99 percent of <br />Colorado's municipalities. <br /> <br />Major policies of CML are established by the membership at an annual business meeting and by the CML Executive <br />Board, Policy Committee and standing committees. The Executive Board is comprised of 19 officials who are elected by <br />the membership at the CML annual business meeting. They serve for two-year terms. Service on the Policy Committee <br />and standing committees is open to any municipal official from a member city or town, Daily operations of the League are <br />carried out by CML staff. <br /> <br />CML also has special-interest sections that cooperate with and help the municipal officials performing specific functions for <br />their communities. Examples of sections include Mayors and Councilmembers, Managers, Attorneys and Clerks. <br /> <br />CML is organized into 14 districts, along the same geographic lines as the state's 14 planning regions. Each district elects <br />officers and holds at least one meeting a year that includes a program of interest to officials in that district.
