Rl
tyofe MemorandumL uri1
Parks & Recreation
To: Recreation Advisory Board
From: Kathy Martin
Date: 03/22/21
Subject: Senior Services Programming
Purpose:
The purpose of this agenda item is to update the board with the plan for the reintroduction of
programming within the Senior Services.
Background:
Since March of 2020 the majority of senior programs and activities were cancelled due to the
pandemic. In July 2020 the Recreation Center was re -opened but the senior center remained
closed. Senior services has worked hard to stay connected with seniors during this period of
time by offering curbside meal service, completing care calls to check on seniors, offering a drive
up wellness fair, a drive up concert and ice cream social, Zoom fitness classes, access to the loan
closet, foot care by the VNA, tax aide services as well as other virtual programs such as book
club, art club and Bloomin Seniors. Staff also introduced "Virtual" trips including CU Holiday
Concert, CO Symphony at Red Rocks, the Denver Art Museum and will visit the Louvre virtually
this month. Staff also honored our older Americans in May of 2020 on Zoom with a
virtual concert featuring Cody Qualls from FACE.
Prior to the pandemic senior services had 3 full time staff members and 1- 30 hour per week
meal site coordinator. Due to budget reductions, the position dedicated directly to senior
programming was eliminated. At this time the plan when reintroducing senior programs is for
the remaining senior services staff to all take on various programs and coordination as programs
are reintroduced.
Next Steps
Beginning in March -April senior services will be able to offer limited in person programs for
seniors. These programs will require seniors to pre -register for any onsite programs, participant
levels will be limited, social distancing required as well as masks at all times. Programs that will
begin in April and May include but are not limited to: Bridge, Line Dancing, Mah Jong, a May
Older Americans Month outdoor lunch and parking lot concert, in person fitness classes as well
as virtual classes continuing.
