Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
March 22, 2021
conditions, the turf gym is seasonally busy, with soccer leagues, summer day
camp, rentals, and drop -in times.
Board members discussed the proposal and thought that this activity
would be attractive to certain groups of patrons. However, this is a difficult
time to consider new programs, with all of the constantly shifting COVID
restrictions. Once the rec center has returned to a more normal operation,
staff can look into this. An archery program would need to be safe, meet
insurance requirements, and not cause damage to the rec center. Equipment
would need to be something that could be easily set up and removed, as the
space has multiple uses. An outdoor archery program could be an option.
Staff Updates
Rec Center Aquatic Amenities Update
Paul Borth reported the results of a poll to determine young patrons'
preferences regarding the proposed aquatic amenities. The poll was
conducted at the Surf & Turf event on February 27 and the following
weekend, with over 300 votes. Patrons selected which amenity should be
added first. After tallying the votes, the zipline was first, the inflatable second,
and the climbing wall third. Staff amended their recommendations regarding
the purchase order of the amenities to reflect the results of the poll.
Resolved: Staff should move forward with the purchase of the zipline.
Motion: Michele Van Pelt
Second: Brett Nickerson
The motion was approved unanimously.
Rec Center and Senior Services Programming Update
Kathy Martin reported that the Rec Center open hours on Saturday will extend
to 5:00 PM. She anticipates that the current schedule will remain unchanged
through the end of August. There is not enough demand for additional
weekend hours, and weekday evening hours are already committed to the
Monarch High swim team through June 23.
Kathy presented a Senior Services update.
Beginning in March and April, the Senior Center is offering limited in -
person programs. These include billiards, bridge, Mah Jong, and line
dancing, as well as meetings of the art club, gardening club, and craft
club. For in -person activities, Seniors will need to pre -register and wear
masks. Senior Services will continue to offer some virtual and hybrid
programs. Kathy reported that the Senior Center and the Recreation
Center are not allowed to use vaccination status as an entry requirement.
