Historical Commission
Minutes
February 18, 2009
It was generally agreed that Museum tours and the assisting of visitors should be a
high priority. Currently, the people who help the Museum Coordinator with these
tasks this are a combination of Commission members and other volunteers.
The Pioneer Award was generally viewed as something well worth continuing that
does not involve a large time commitment.
With respect to fundraising, it was suggested that while the Commission has been
very successful with raising money in recent years, the time spent on fundraising
activities can potentially have the effect of taking away from the limited time
available for other activities.
The Silent Auction was discussed. As a result of the many hours spent by the
Fundraising Committee, it has been the biggest fundraiser in recent years. It helps
raise funds through solicitations to local businesses for items to donate. Its purpose
is not related to educating people about the history of the Louisville area. Some
Commission members expressed their concern that businesses might be less
willing to donate items for the Auction given the current economic climate. Also, it
was announced that a longtime volunteer for the Auction has indicated that she
would like to start spending time on other activities instead.
It was decided that the Auction will be discussed further at the next meeting along
with a discussion of the amount of time available by Commission members to work
on it. It was suggested that if the Commission members decide that the Auction
should continue, it could be a project with its own coordinator, separate from the
organization of other fundraising activities such as the Holiday Home Tour. The
wrap up of the Silent Auction in the past has sometimes run into the time to begin
planning for the Holiday Home Tour.
It was noted that the Holiday Home Tour fulfills the Museum's mission of community
education (and the Commission's mission to raise public awareness about Louisville
history) and is also a fundraising activity. Former event hosts Anne Robinson and
Colleen Vandendriessche spoke to the popularity of the event in the community and
stated that a significant number of people come back year after year. It was also
noted that the Historic Preservation Commission members may be available to help
to organize and staff this event in the future because of their interests in Louisville's
historic houses.
The Craft Boutique is a part of the event that has served to enhance the experience
of participants in the Holiday Home Tour, but it was expressed that if there is limited
time for coordinating the Home Tour, the Craft Boutique is an aspect of the event
that could potentially be altered or discontinued because it is not a fundraiser for the
Museum and it does not educate the public about Louisville history. The idea was
suggested that perhaps a different group would be interested in coordinating it in
conjunction with the Holiday Home Tour.
With respect to booths for events and open houses, it was generally expressed that
the booths during July 4`h and La Festa should be discontinued, along with the Main
