LC,of
Louisville
PARKS & RECREATION
To: Open Space Advisory Board
From: Ember Brignull, Open Space Superintendent
Date: May 12, 2021
Re: Information Item 6: Staff Updates
General:
1. OSAB meeting venue. Until further notice, the City is requesting that board meetings continue to
occur via zoom. The staff liaison will notify board members when City Council has made a decision
for boards to meet in person. Council discussion regarding in -person meetings is tentatively
scheduled for July.
2. Boulder County Parks and Open space has canceled the 20201 Youth Corp season due to COVID
restrictions related to transportation.
Trails & Maintenance:
1. Requests for proposals for the Wayfinding project are due on May 5, 2021. Proposals will be
reviewed by a selection committee comprised of Open Space staff, Parks staff, and members of
the OSAB Wayfinding Tiger Team. Notice of final selection is tentatively scheduled for May 12,
2021. The Request for Proposals and the 2014 Wayfinding Plan documents can be found here:
https://www.louisvilleco.gov/doing-business/bidding-opportunities-requests-for-proposals.
Project completion is targeted for July 30, 2021.
2. Staff is in the process of installing a new trail connection at Dutch Creek Open Space. The project
has been delayed due to poor weather conditions. The trail connection is being installed on the
backside of the pocket prairies to replace a bare ground area being used as a trail. The trail bench
has been cut, and the road base has been installed. The remaining steps include installing the
landscape fabric and crusher fines and compacting the crusher fines with the new 1-ton vibratory
roller to tamp and fortify the trail section.
3. The staff has been working on Arc GIS trail projects by updating symbology and the attribute
tables.
4. Rose Arman, Open Space Seasonal, will be joining our team soon! Rose will be primarily assigned
to the Trails & Maintenance team.
5. Due to recent weather fronts crossing the Front Range, the City's trails have experienced flooding
and water damage. The storm front that moved through the area on May 2nd and 3rd impacted
the Coal Creek Regional trail in two main sections forcing the City to close these areas of the trail.
The first section being the Highway 42 underpass leaving Aquarius Open Space. The flooded area
did drain, and the creek water left behind some sediment on the trail. There was little to no trail
damage other than the removal of the sedimentary build-up. This section of trail will be open for
use once the creek's water levels go down and the heavy rain passes. The second location is in
the section of the Coal Creek trail between the access point at the end of Augusta Lane and the
bridge at the Northeast section of the Coal Creek golf course and/or Dutch Creek Open Space.
This portion of the Coal Creek trail suffered a hefty amount of damage and will need to be repaired
once the weather and conditions permit it. The repairs will take approximately two to three weeks
of uninterrupted staff time to complete and should remain closed until that time.
IN
